It is with deep sadness that Storefront Manitoba must acknowledge the passing of one of its founders, architect David Penner, who served as the organization’s President and Executive Director. Through his personal practice as well as his work with Storefront, David drove the frontier of excellence in architecture and design in Winnipeg, and has inspired a new generation of passionate innovators.

StorefrontMB is committed to continuing Davidʼs legacy by striving to be (in Davidʼs words) “bold, hyper-visible, hyper-accessible, hyper-compelling, and just really good.” As such, StorefrontMB will proceed with all regularly scheduled programming. This currently includes Bar Nano at 10x20x20 (January 2020), an installation at the New Music Festival entitled Portal X (January 2020), Storefrontʼs annual fundraiser Table for 1200 More (May 2020), the Cool Gardens design competition and installation (Spring 2020), the Benchmark design competition and installation (Summer 2020), the Winnipeg Design Festival (2021), and the Commerce Design Awards (2021). Storefront is also planning an exhibit and publication to commemorate David’s work.

The David Penner Endowment Fund has now been established as a legacy to continue David’s important work in the city. Donations will support the diverse range of programming offered by Storefront Manitoba. We are also collecting stories about David to use in an exhibit commemorating the work of David Penner. You can share your story in the “Buyer’s Note” section at checkout, or email them to info@storefrontmb.ca. Please make a note if you would like your donation and/or story to remain anonymous. Donations can be made on the Storefront website through our online store Here.

We are looking forward to an exciting roster of projects that will continue David Pennerʼs important work and legacy in the city, and hope to see you in attendance.
