Now in its fourth year, Benchmark is once again hosting an international design competition to bring unique site furnishings to our neighbourhoods and celebrate Manitoba’s diverse trail network.  Our trails offer a multitude of trail experiences from wilderness pathways, rail trails, rural tracks, forested paths, historic canoe routes to logging roads, country roads, secondary highways, paved urban walkways, and downtown streets.

Congratulations to our 2020 Winners!

Picnic located in Downtown Winnipeg (Graham Ave.)

by Nicole Marion (Studio Marion) and Chris Wiebe (AtLRG Architecture Inc.) from Winnipeg, MB

Picnic is inspired by the humble picnic table, chopped, kinked and overlapping.  It offers comfort to anyone who finds themselves on Graham Avenue for a little, or a long while.  It is for restaurant patrons, bus stop waiters, bike parkers and passers-by.

Reflection Station located in Pinawa, MB

by Sophia Tang and Hans-Christian Buhl (Sophie & Hans) from Berlin, Germany

Reflection Station is a compilation of furniture that reflects the enchanting boreal forest, while also revealing the human transformation of nature. The materiality of the furniture merges and disappears into the surroundings.

The different forms allow for an array of activities for the forest meanderers. Whether you would want to simply lean and look around, to sit and read a book, or lay and soak in the surrounding topiary beauty.

Thank you to everyone who participated this year!

Storefront Manitoba and The Winnipeg Trails Association ask designers to put their skills to work and challenge the concept of a ‘common’ bench. This design competition looks for interventions that have the power to stop people in their tracks and provide a place to wait, rest, read and more.

The Winnipeg Trails Association and Storefront Manitoba invite design teams to submit proposals for a permanent bench to be located along the Trans Canada Trail.
