Pinawa, MB is one of two sites to choose from for the Benchmark 2020 Competition!
It is located along the Pinawa Trail, a 28.43 km long trail that runs through Métis and Anishinabewaki territory, and provides a connection from the Pinawa Dam Provincial Heritage Park to the Seven Sisters Generating Station. The site’s provincial icon, the Pinawa Suspension Bridge, is a 1m wide suspension bridge that spans the 54m width of the Pinawa Channel and offers prime views of the channel’s popular summer fishing and tubing recreation.

Portal X, a StorefrontMB initiative, will be on display at the Winnipeg New Music Festival at the Centennial Concert Hall this weekend, January 25th to the 31st!
Portal X is an inhabitable sculpture, instrument, and a metaphor that invites contemplation of the temporal and the infinite, created and produced by architect Richard Derksen with Monteyne Architecture Works. Local composers Jesse Krause & Darren Day have written discrete streams of electronic and chorale music, which intersect.
Special thanks to a great team: Builder Ted Geddert of Holz Construction, composers Jesse Krause & Darren Day, Studio wizard John Schritt of Channels Audio, Graphic Designer Kat Polischuk, and our sponsor Manitoba Association of Architects
It is with deep sadness that Storefront Manitoba must acknowledge the passing of one of its founders, architect David Penner, who served as the organization’s President and Executive Director. Through his personal practice as well as his work with Storefront, David drove the frontier of excellence in architecture and design in Winnipeg, and has inspired a new generation of passionate innovators.
StorefrontMB is committed to continuing Davidʼs legacy by striving to be (in Davidʼs words) “bold, hyper-visible, hyper-accessible, hyper-compelling, and just really good.” As such, StorefrontMB will proceed with all regularly scheduled programming. This currently includes Bar Nano at 10x20x20 (January 2020), an installation at the New Music Festival entitled Portal X (January 2020), Storefrontʼs annual fundraiser Table for 1200 More (May 2020), the Cool Gardens design competition and installation (Spring 2020), the Benchmark design competition and installation (Summer 2020), the Winnipeg Design Festival (2021), and the Commerce Design Awards (2021). Storefront is also planning an exhibit and publication to commemorate David’s work.
The David Penner Endowment Fund has now been established as a legacy to continue David’s important work in the city. Donations will support the diverse range of programming offered by Storefront Manitoba. We are also collecting stories about David to use in an exhibit commemorating the work of David Penner. You can share your story in the “Buyer’s Note” section at checkout, or email them to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please make a note if you would like your donation and/or story to remain anonymous. Donations can be made on the Storefront website through our online store Here.
We are looking forward to an exciting roster of projects that will continue David Pennerʼs important work and legacy in the city, and hope to see you in attendance.
